Bright things overhead

Wee ones love a bit of action in the rafters. Anything up high, airplanes, hot air balloons, helium balloons, clouds, birds... They love things up there! So what could be better to adorn their own piece of "up there" with a bit of bright? Here's 2 beautiful kids rooms that do bright above well.

DIY: Circus Big Top Pinata

Over the weekend Hugh and I decided to have a go at making a pinata for his birthday party. Why make one and not buy one? Why not? Generally, I find making things like this so much more gratifying than just going out and buying it, and "doing it yourself" is a way of thinking that I like to impart to my boys whenever I can. Besides, you end up with exactly what you want instead of having to compromise to what's available... so, in the spirit of all things "circus" we couldn't think of anything better than a big top to model our creation on. Here's a step by step tutorial of how it came together...
1. With an old corrugated cardboard box broken down flat we made a cylinder and fastened the join with masking tape. 2. using the cylinder as a guide we traced a circle on a second piece for the bottom and taped it al together with masking tape. 3. Cut triangles from the leftover cardboard and tape them together to for a cone and tape to the top of the cylinder (there are 8 triangles in the shot below but we took one off to leave an opening so we can later fill the pinata with goodies). The number of triangles you'll need will depend on the diameter of your cylinder. We didn't use any measurements but made it up as we went and it all worked fine...
4. For the decoration we didn't have any crepe paper so we used red and white laser printer paper - either will work well. Cut strips of paper about 7cm (3") wide (we cut an A4 sheet lengthways into thirds) and then snip a fringed edge almost all the way through leaving a little bit at the top for gluing. 5. Glue the fringed strips onto the structure overlapping as you go. We started out using sticky tape for this but glue (just PVA craft glue) worked much better we learned a little way into it. 6. Using a contrasting colour (we used yellow) cut a bunting/banner type strip to wrap around the top of your walls. 7. Cut a small circle from the same colour to sit on top of your cone shape to cover up the untidy bit at the top where all your fringing joins up. 8. We made a flag from some old silver gift wrap we had in the craft box - cut into a triangle shape and wrapped around a skewer fastened with sticky tape and stuck through the tip of the cone. 9. In the name of environmentalism we poked all our scrap leftover bits of paper inside the pinata to cascade out when it gets broken party day. Voila!

Doily garlands

I want to make some of these to decorate our Easter table... but which one to choose?

Easter Craft: Pretty Pastel Wreath

Sugared almonds make an especially sweet Easter decoration. And this one's easy peasy to do. Glue guns ready...

1. Take a 30cm Styrofoam wreath (available at Spotlight), and beginning with the inside circumference, hot glue the almonds in place, overlapping a few of them to add dimension.

2. Continue in a circular pattern until the entire front and inner and outer edges of the wreath are covered.

3. Hang with a sturdy piece of cotton ribbon.

To store the wreath, wrap it in paper, place flat in a box, and keep in a cool, dry spot. It should last for one to two years.

Make it: FREE Easter decorations

This is not only the cutest easter decoration I've seen - it's FREE! Follow the easy step by step...

Step 1: Choose a selection of paint chips in your favourite hues from your local hardware store. (I find kids make great partners in crime for this one - you can't keep them away from the paint chips!)

Step 2: Using a template trace out an egg shape on the back of each chip. Cut out and punch two holes in the top of each egg.

Step 3: Thread twine through your punched holes (an invisible thread would work great for this). I really like the way the colours vignette across the garland, but a random placement would work just as well - that bit's up to you!

Step 4: This is the hard bit - now you need to choose a spot to hang it up.

Make it: Pom Pom Dandelions

This is my weekend project. (If I find any spare time after Noah's birthday party festivities are over...). Aren't they gorgeous? They'll be great for the winter months ahead when there aren't any fresh flowers in my garden... I found it over at PoppyTalk -  Super easy to do. All you need to do is make little woolly pompoms and a bit of glue to stick them onto twigs! If your 2nd grade tutorial on pompom craft isn't coming back to you just hop over here for a refresher...

Style it up - Gorgeous Gift Wrap!

Hello gorgeous wrapping! When I first saw this I thought "So pretty but who'd have the time?" I was suitably surprised to see it's actually not that hard. I'm keeping this one in mind for mothers day...

Materials

1-2 yards of ribbon in various tones, about 2″-3″ in width
Miscellaneous material, such as burlap, knit sweaters, etc…
Twine

Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Cut several pieces of ribbon in 3″-5″ increments, depending upon desired size of your finished pom. Do the same with material, sweaters and burlap.
2. Make a large stack, alternating each color and type of material. Using your twine, tie a very tight knot around the center of the entire stack.
3. Cut your ribbon into smaller strips, keeping the center uncut. Separate and pull strips apart to make your completed pom!

Party theme of the week: Back to school

It's almost time for the wee ones to head back to school... (cue squeals of delight from exhausted mums). And here's the perfect remedy for a reluctant student. A Back to School Party! I know what you're thinking, a party? Noooo!!!!!! But look how cute this stuff is! Go on.... They'll love it!

Back to school cupcakes
These cupcakes earn top marks for sweetening even the most reluctant student's return to school.

Ingredients
Yellow, green, and white frosting
Cupcakes
Red Skittles or M&M's
Small plastic bag
Rubber band or twist tie
Tim Tams - halved
Tic Tacs

Instructions
Cover the cupcakes with yellow frosting and allow them to sit for an hour before decorating. Dab each red Skittle or M&M with a bit of green frosting for the apple's leaf, then set them aside.

Put a tablespoon or two of white frosting into a small plastic bag for piping. Cut a very small hole in a corner of the bag, twist the top of the bag closed, and secure it with a rubber band or twist tie. Piping the frosting gently out of the hole, write messages on the Tim Tams. Leave space at the bottom of the cookie, where it'll be stuck into the cupcake.

Cut a groove in the cupcake's frosting with a knife, then fit a blackboard into the groove. Add one Skittle or M&M apple and a piece of Tic Tac chalk, as shown.

Make it: 2 quick christmas craft ideas

Here's 2 last minute christmas craft ideas from the gorgeous girls at Babyccino Kids - just in case you've exhausted everything you had up your sleeve! These will get you through the last 2 days...
Ok, so clearly this is an American idea and the longevity of your creation might be somewhat limited by the temperature - BUT I thought I'd include it here because it could be a lot of fun on a hot day to stand under your melting icicle and be showered with drips of cool water! You could put anything at all in the middle - it doesn't have to be leaves. What about cardboard cut-out shapes of Santa faces, christmas trees and candy canes? Or even really candy canes! That'd keep the little ones standing under their icicle till the last drip fell for sure! I like this idea.

And what about a wooden clothes pegs for decorations? Have a look here for the instructions for both projects...

Party theme of the week: Up

How extraordinary is this lucky child's party theme?!!! I only wish I had the time to pull something like this off! Photographer, Wendy put this little soiree on for her daughter Bella's 7th birthday. The party was an outdoor movie night (complete with a white sheet for a movie screen and red velvet curtains in the garden...) and the detail Wendy has managed to incorporate into the event is just beyond amazing. Have a look at the photos and get your inspiration on!

And here's a link for a DIY tutorial to make your own balloon wreath like this one!

Have you been to a party this extravagant?
