A Nifty Nook

Noosh (the brand) is all about clever ideas. We're inspired every day by the thoughtful creations that are available on the market and we try (really really hard) to make sure that the designs we bring to you will be a solution to one of your kidspace decor issues. This is just one of the clever creations that I have found inspirational this week. It's a concealed shelf unit. It hangs from a wall and it's front panel folds down to create a desk space for the kiddos. Neatness is no longer an issue because you can just close up the mess and hide it away! Genius! Now all I need is a couple of tidy kids!

My top 4 great bedroom ideas

1. A racetrack for the floor. Boys love running their cars up and down the walls and across the floor and furniture - why not give them a stylish track that's mess-free and doesn't need to be packed away at the end of the day?
2. A blackboard shape for the wall. This bold blackboard shape makes a statement even when it's blank. It provides the kiddos with a spot to draw, write and play and can either be painted on with blackboard paint, or if you're after a less permanant solution, try ebay or amazon for blackboard contact paper for only about $12 a roll.
3. The princess canopy. Most little girls love the soft, prttiness that mosquito nets bring to a room. Why not make your own with a sheer fabric that works with your decor?
4. Starry starry night lights. Like most wee ones, Hugh is scared of the dark. We've tried many solutions over the years with different nightlights but mostly they're either too bright or not bright enough (he's kind of a Goldilocks type). The one we've got now though is working best of them all - a battery operated set of ten LED starlights we picked up at Spotlight for $5. I've wrapped them around the bedhead and they stay on all night. Best part is, they don't contribute to the electricity bill! Oh, and they look good too...

YUM: Fun Fruity Stacks

How do you get the kiddos to eat their fruit? Make it crazy fruit!

Cheap flooring DIY idea

Would you believe me if I told you this floor was laid for around $1 per square metre? One Dollar people! And it looks fantastic! It's DIY. It's easy and its the cheapest darn floor you'll ever get looking this good... I found this project over at Design Dazzle and it's really quite genius. It's made from ply sheeting!

You can pick up at your local hardware for around $10 per sheet or if you have a bit more time, you can save even more cash by having a look on eBay or Grays Online where there are often auctions for bulk quantities and then you can save a bundle.

Cut into 15cm wide strips the length of your sheets.

Start laying them on your prepped floor! These were stuck down with Liquid Nails, given a light sand (as ply can be a little splintery and rough) and then stained. Stain-wise I would tend to go for either a darker chocolate colour stain or a whitewash for a more contemporary finish.

Varnish Tip: Remember that if you use a stain with a built in varnish (or any varnish for any job), go for a water based one over oil based to avoid yellowing later.

Staining Tip: Always start at the end of the room furthest from the door so as not to "paint yourself into a corner" so to speak...

Laying Tip: Cut your boards to at least 3 different lengths so that your joins don't fall into a uniform pattern like this. The end result will be much better with a more random join configuration.

To finish, these floors were given a polyurethane coating, which gives a glossy and smooth finish and makes the floors more resiliant to scratches. I think the result looks fantastic! Especially for the price! But even without the cost consideration I prefer this to the knotty pine floors we have in our place... Such a great idea - colour me impressed!

Ideas I'm loving this week...

Go out on a limb and make your own drawer handles...

Create a magical sleeping space with twinkling fairy lights and sheer curtains...

Get to work on a family tree. This one is on Etsy - pretty huh?

Don't just stair...

My next house will have to be 2 storey so I can steal this idea...
As much as I love Mr Morisson, I think I'd like to use something more inspirational...
What would you use?

Top notch setups

Boxes, buckets, sheets and bins... Who'd have thought you could make these gems?!!!

Skip the gallery wall

Here's a great idea for a gallery wall. The handles make such a cute detail. And customising your pegs would make a great decorating project for the kiddos...

Wardrobe inspiration

Mmmmm... This is where my wallpaper inspiration came from for my wardrobe makeover. It always amazes me how such a simple extra touch can make such a significant difference!

Cheap Ikea Cheats...

Remember the $2.50 Bookshelves I told you about a while ago? Well, I've just found 2 more fantastic ideas - let's call them "alternative uses for Ikea designs"...

1: The car storage strip
At $19.99 each, these Asker Magnetic Knife Racks from Ikea make excellent car storage - and what a great feature if you ran them all around the room like a low slung picture rail....?

2: The Vertical Jewellery Box
Take one basic timber cutlery tray - available at Ikea for around $15. Add some pretty papers and vintage drawer knobs to hang your jewels from... Voila!

For angels only

The only thing that could be better than these is knowing where to get them! If I find out I'll let you know, and if you know tell me! Please!

Blackboard 101

I'm still scouting for playroom ideas and this is one room I'd like to replicate in detail. It reminds me of the old school hall across the road from our primary school with the mini bank of removable stairs. Except instead of a desk at the left there'd be a piano... Possibly a bit too architecturally ambitious for my little makeover but very inspiring none-the-less. I know there'll be a blackboard in our new playspace somewhere, somehow... And while we're talking blackboards, take a look at these!
I love this blackboard application below as well. Definitely have to be including a blackboard in the makeover. Our folding one we bought for the boys is all warped and ruined now from being on the verandah - did that happen to you? Mental note: If blackboard is to live inside the house I must remember to buy dustless chalk...

Want this: Lubbly cubby

I love every inch of this cubby. From the bold Hermes orange colour choice and picket fence to the barn style door and dainty potted colour. Do you think upstairs is off limits for girls? I'm getting that impression...

Le stripe

My new favourite destination for inspiration is Pinterest. If you haven't been there yet, you gotta go! Like - now. Pinterest is a social network (don''t groan) and pinboard for ideas rolled into one. The best part about it is that it's still relatively new and most of the content is fantastic. The other best bit is that you can see what everyone else has on their pinboards and you can "repin" things you like... I'm probably not selling it very well but I love it. Anyway, while I was wasting my afternoon away on there today, le stripe was everywhere so today's post is dedicated to le stripe... Pointy stripes, stripes on walls, rug stripes, wavy stripes, stripes and spots, stairway stripes, frilly stripes, t-shirt stripes.... you get the picture. My personal faves are the two staircases. Maybe that's just because I'm in decorating mode.
