Before & After: Vintage twins

This piece over at Apartment Therapy actually turned me green with envy when I first saw it, it's another one of those stories of an unbelievable buy that will clearly be absolutely amazing with a coat of the right colour...
Lesli picked up a gorgeous vintage twin bed at a local garage sale. She snapped it up as soon as she saw it with a price tag of only $25! What a bargain! It was only as she was driving home that she realised something didn't add up - the kind seller who had loaded the pieces into her car had forgotten to mention the $25 price was for TWO of these lovelies - not one! Now, why can't this kind of thing happen to me I ask you?

With a coat of the palest grey and a vibrant fabric selection, they've come up every inch as gorgeous as I imagined they could....

Inspired? I am. I'm off to trawl the Trading Post for garage sales...

Before & After: Bar stools

This guy is about as average as they come with his maple-gone-wrong gloss varnish... (funny how varnish is so close to vanish isn't it? And the world would probably be a better place if the varnish would just vanish I say...) But in his defence, he's got good rungs. Rungs a kiddo could comfortably rest his wee feet on....

Then - hello! What a remarkable difference a coat of white paint can make! Holly over at In the Fun Lane really knows how to bring out the best in unloved wares. I always enjoy popping over there for a visit - she has such a great eye for good bones in furniture (and a great source that supplies them all to her! I wish I could find such gorgeous pieces here in Sydney), but the thing I like most about Holly's projects is her attention to the details. Every piece she recreates has it's own special "thing" going on...

With this guy, it's the + or x on the seat. Most of us would stop at the completely new colour... Well, here's your inspiration to take things one step further...

Before & After: Drawers for OCDs

This project is another of Holly's and it's actually my favourite one so far. As usual, not much to look at.

Tell me this isn't genius! I would kill (almost) for this bank of drawers!

Filing label plates! I love it!

Before & After: Map cabinet

This old cabinet has a lovely style about it but doesn't look much at the moment. Fortunately for it, someone saw past its drab state and committed themselves to bringing her back to her brilliant best.

A coat of matt black and some distressing of her edges makes the world of difference doesn't it? Take a look too at the little details her new owners added to give her that extra little bit of charm...

DIY: Chalkboard Table

Look what I did! I'm so very proud of myself! Not only did I finish a project, but it was easy, it looks brilliant - and it works too! Kids chalkboard tables and the like aren't cheap - you can spend upwards of $300 for a basic table - something that wasn't on my agenda for the weekend... so...

The project: Produce a play/craft/chalkboard table for under $20.
You'll need: *One Ikea Lack table ($9.99). *One round plastic takeaway container
*Masking tape. *Primer. *One tin of chalkboard paint. *a drill. *a jigsaw. *a Paint Brush

Instructions: Find the centre point of your table. Line up the centre of the plastic container and trace carefully around the top edge. Using your drill with a large drill bit, make a hole on the inside edge of the circle you just traced. Then carefully insert your jigsaw blade down the hole and start cutting around the inside edge of the circle. (remember if you cut around the outside of the circle your container will fall through - you need to cut inside of the circle so the hole is smaller than the container). Once your hole is cut, check the container fits. Mask around the sides of your table. Give one coat of primer to the table top (I used some self priming outdoor paint that was lying around which worked well). Once dry give it 2 coats of chalkboard paint. Allow these 2 coats time to cure as recommended on the tin. Nearly there, we painted our container black as the inside of a lack table aint a pretty place as you'll see... Pop your takeaway container once it's dry, in the hole and VOILA!

We already had the table, the chalkboard paint and primer - actually, all of it so didn't cost us a dime. But realistically, even if you had to go out and buy all of the elements, you'd still only be up for around 20 clams. Not bad eh? Only thing is, ours hasn't looked like this since I took the photo, I think they watch me wipe it and swoop when I walk away...

IKEA Hack: Affordable upholstered bed!

This is a fantastic IKEA hack. Jen over at Organised Design has accomplished the impossible - an upholstered bed for under $100! The Looks great huh? And it's as easy as "pass me the staple gun". Start with an IKEA Fjellse single bed frame for $39 and you end up with this! Click here for the full how to...

Before & After: Teen room OR How to get a teenager to keep their room tidy

It doesn't take much to lift a room. This makeover shows how a simple clearout and the addition of a few stylish pieces can create a complete transformation! Not much heavy elbow grease required for most of these changes and the result is great. I have a theory too, that a makeover like this - particularly for a teenager - can be the catalyst required for them to take a bit of pride in their environment and want to keep it tidy....

Before & After: Cleverest repurpose ever!

I've shown you some pretty radical transformations in our Before and After series so far, but this takes the cake! (and the kitchen too!)

Before & After: Stunning sideboard

It never fails to astound me how a coat of paint can completely transform a tired piece and give it new life and purpose. Recycling at it's best.

Before & After: My Wardrobe

I'm so excited to finally be showing this project to you. I've been working on it for weeks (not weeks solidly, just weeks because I can only ever seem to snatch an hour at a time without someone needing a snack or some paint or a referee...). I found it on eBay and it was about the third one I bid on but somebody kept beating me to the punch! This one thankfully didn't get away, and I'm very glad now the I was saved from the others. She's a 1930's solid oak number in reasonable condition. She hasn't been doted on and is quite dry in areas but once I'm finished with her she'll smile once more. Now I should warn you, if you're a purist you may not love or even approve of the transformation that has taken place...

What do you think? I absolutely love her. She's come up every inch as stunning as I'd hoped. I was so fortunate her mirrors are original and they are pristine in their bevelled elegance. I chose to paint her after taking on board some good advice from my clever friend William, and I'm so glad. The black Feast Watson Prooftint stain that I used without diluting has let her retain her gorgeous grain. Two coats did the trick and I finished her with a matt Danish Oil by Cabots. The delicious black and white pinstripe wallpaper (which I've only used half a roll of and you'll be seeing it on another project soon) is by Moore & Moore - they only just launched and have a stunning range of designs all with an Australian flavour.
So, down to tin tacks - how much? The wardrobe was a steal at $109. Stains, wallpaper, paste and oil came to $255. I still need to put new drawer pulls and a new door knob on her but haven't been able to find exactly what I want yet so add about another $50 for those... $400ish. Not bad for a piece I'm besotted by. To find anything like this in a store would be near impossible and if I did I'd expect it to cost a lot more than $400! Plus, she's mine. I made her. And that satisfaction is beyond value.
Please, tell me what you think of her!

Before & After: Chairs

You know how much I love a before and after. Here are three I found on Design Sponge that I had to share...

Before & After: Sideboards

While this doesn't really fit into the realm of feeding/entertaining or decorating for kids, it was way too good to not share with you. I know how much I love a before and after, and these are sooooooo inspiring!
